What We Learn from Pitching
I recently read a quote from a Roman historian I find applicable for this post - "The study of history is the best medicine for a sick mind; for in history you have a record of the infinite variety of human experience plainly set out for all to see; and in that record you can find yourself."
I know, deep thought for the day, huh. The point is that if we never take a look at our past performances as coaches and players, we are doomed to repeat the same issues this year. To avoid this, here is what we have learned about teaching pitching this past year.
#1 - There are two skills that must be developed for maximum effectiveness as a pitcher (or any athlete for that matter). Physical skills must be refined and proper mental skill development must take place through practice also. Sometimes all of us get caught up in the next best training facility or the next best product to boost the physical game. We have to remember that this part of pitching is only half of the game. The mental side is vital to success as well.
#2 - There are a lot of pitching theories floating around out there. This advice can be applied to any area, but for pitching sake, take good care that the advice you are receiving is legit and being duplicated by players at the higher levels of baseball. Cross reference info, participate in discussions, ask questions, become a learner of pitching.
#3 - Market yourself well. If you have a goal of playing at the upper levels of baseball it is important to take action now in developing connections in the baseball community that can help you gain visibility. On the same note, word of mouth spreads quicker than we think sometimes. Especially in a digital world with instant messaging, email, texting, etc. Be aware of the image you build this year, it may stick with you for a while. You never know how a moment of lapse in your game may be seen by people who are important to your success.
