The Pitcher-Catcher Relationship: What Your Catcher Should Know and Do!I love pitching because you feel you have complete control of the game. The game does not start until you throw the first pitch. You can control your teams demeanor by instilling complete confidence in yourself and it is contagious. But, what about your catcher? His role is just as important, maybe even more important than yours. Yes I said more important. Why?A catcher wears many hats; especially at a Major League level because they catch for so many different pitchers. Each pitcher brings a unique delivery and attitude to the mound. In every game of the season there are most likely going to be different umpires that have unique strike zones and personalities. Catching is a job that is often taken for granted because a great catcher is really a psychologist as well.
Catchers are pitching coaches. When you or any other pitcher is struggling on your team with mechanics or other mental issues; your catcher can remind you to release later on your curveball, calm down and pinpoint what attitude adjusting you need to make to win the game. That is why catchers can be seen as the team psychologist. Again, every pitcher brings a different attitude to the game; a great catcher understands those attitudes and can build confidence in each pitcher in any game situation.
Catchers are field managers and great team captains. They lead the team by reminding us all about how many outs there are, positioning of players in unique game situations, tell infield to throw the ball to first on a 3-2, 2 out count, they protect the pitcher and more importantly they create a better relationship with umpires than the coaches can.
