I have recently been working with a 10U baseball team on
how to throw a baseball properly. The task is to get handful of 9 and 10 year olds to throw the baseball over the plate consistently. Sounds easy enough, right? If you have worked with young baseball pitchers, you know how tricky it is. I am pleased to say that we are making great progress on how to throw a baseball correctly. Here are the points weve spent time on over the past few months.
1. Proper balance. My preference is to not start the pitchers out in the wind-up position. Ive found that younger athletes have a tough time transitioning their weight from the step back to the leg lift position. So because of this, we begin from the stretch. I have the kids lift their leg to a level position with their ankle hanging under their knee, not tucked in under their rear. This will help with more balance.
2. The next sequence of pitching in this phase of how to throw a baseball correctly is to make sure that momentum begins to be shifted towards home plate beginning with the front hip of the pitcher. This insures that momentum is being generated towards home. Its typical for young pitchers to bend their back knee before creating any momentum. This of course is useless and not productive for creating momentum.
3. Next, we work on a balanced landing position. To throw a baseball correctly, we need to have the weight distribution in the center of the body during this step. Its important as the front hip begins to move forward and the lifted leg begins to drop that the hand holding the baseball comes out of the glove. Many times in this process the pitchers take the ball out of the glove too late. Late separation means that they may not get their arm up to the correct throwing position. My preference is that the baseball is visible above the head of the pitcher. This allows the pitcher to use gravity to his advantage and throw downhill.
These three steps are the main focus for me when Im teaching young kids how to throw a baseball . If they can do this consistently then it has been my experience that young pitchers will have a great chance to build some confidence on the mound.
