Recovery Time: After Game Day
Throwing a baseball, regardless of how great your pitching mechanics are, can place some undue stress on your throwing arm. As you have learned from some previous articles, throwing off the mound is a tearing down process on your arm. That is why I wrote an article on limiting the amount of throws off the mound each week. The average recovery time for most pitchers, after game day, is three full days. It is imperative as a pitcher that you adhere to some basic guidelines the day after you start pitching in any game.
First of all, within three hours from your last pitch in any start you should ice your elbow and shoulder. The maximum time you can ice your elbow is 10 minutes; shoulder maximum is 20 minutes. In addition to icing your arm, you will want to do some form of aerobic activity to get the blood out of your arm. Nolan Ryan used to ride the stationary bike for 25 minutes before he hit the showers after his starts. It is recommended that your aerobic activity be twice as long as the time you spend icing your arm. 2 minutes for every minute you iced.
The day after your start you should not participate in long toss; it shouldnt matter if the entire team is throwing long toss together. Great coaches will understand that recovery time is necessary if they want you to perform 100% your next start. You should also avoid Flat Ground Bullpen. Your arm needs a break; regardless of what others may tell you. You will see other pitchers who threw in the same game you did, throwing long toss the next day. They will regret the fact toward the end of the season when their fastball is 10 miles an hour slower than it was at the beginning of the year and yours is 5 miles an hour faster; simply because you took care of your arm and you are educated.
It is critical that you rebuild the ligaments and tissues that support your muscles after you throw off the mound. If you dont have a great pitching workout regimen for this I would recommend you to the Pitching Mechanics training video and free bonus products.
One day after the game it is important that you play catch - short toss, do pitching specific drills, strength work and conditioning.
