Pitching is a Mental Game
We have introduced the second tool set in the mental training program for the season. This tool set is geared towards helping athletes identify and remove unwanted or unneeded thoughts that find themselves inside their heads. By doing this, we can help create belief and confidence in their game. The two main points covered were:
1. Becoming aware of the thoughts in the first place. This could be as simple as a fleeting thought of the previous at bat, or a distraction in the stands that lingers in the mind. In both cases the mind has wandered off to the past or the future. Neither of these are good places for high performing athletes to spend a lot of time, at any age. By becoming aware of these thoughts, we can better learn how to manage them.
2. Create and use focal points to regain concentration and focus in "The Now". This technique simply allows an athlete to refocus his attention solely on an object for a couple seconds to retrain his mind to stay in the present. Staring at the logo on the bat, the seams of the ball, or some dirt on a glove will help keep athletes in tune with the game.
Their "homework" for this week is to monitor there thinking and record instances where they have had unwanted and distracting thoughts creep into their mind. If they were able to use some of the focus tactics we taught, great. If not, we will talk next week about some of these thoughts and how again to battle against them long term and in high pressure scenarios especially.
