Pitching and The Mental Game of Baseball

A positive attitude is one of the best ways to improve your chances for success in whatever you do. How do you create a positive attitude on the mound?

The connection between what is going on in your head and how your body responds cannot be emphasized enough.  Pitching is a mental game of chess.

One physical way a pitcher can create confidence and a positive attitude is to work on body language. One simple example is trying to be upset with a smile on your face. It is difficult to do.

As a pitcher, your movements should be crisp and intentional. Sloughing and casual movements on the mound do nothing to help create a positive attitude. Positive people and positive athletes are always moving intentionally. Extra movements do not create a sense of urgency on the mound and are often matched with lazy and unproductive athletes.

A second way to achieve a positive attitude is to monitor your speech. What you say has a direct link to how you act and how your body responds in a game. Low quality thoughts are negative in nature like (I don’t know if I can get my curveball over for a strike, or I’m not sure I can beat this hitter). You’ll quickly find that the more positive your speech is the more positive your outcome.
