Pitching Tips for Balance and Posture
Great pitching mechanics are essential to your success as a baseball pitcher. Proper pitching mechanics will keep your arm healthy and can lead to a longer career. Part of throwing the baseball correctly is maintaining proper balance. Without balance you will have a difficult time throwing consistent strikes. When all of your energy isnt going toward home plate, you run the risk of putting undue stress on your throwing arm and you wont throw as many strikes.
There are five guidelines in finding great balance and posture when you pitch from the stretch.
Pitching Tip #1 Start with feet closed. Place both feet together, put the groove in your left shoe into your right shoe. They will fit together like a puzzle piece. Then spread your feet shoulder width apart.
Pitching Tip #2 Bend your knees. The key here is to bend your knees deep enough to allow your head to stay level when youre throwing from flat ground. If you drop your knee as youre heading toward the plate, then your energy goes down instead of toward home plate which is ideal.
Pitching Tip #3 Place ball and glove in the center of your body. Relax your shoulders. The ball and glove should stay in the middle for balance. When a pitchers glove is too far to either side, they have a hard time keeping their balance when during their leg lift.
Pitching Tip #4 Keep your shoulders closed. If youre a righty, your left shoulder should be closed. Maintain that posture to foot strike.
Pitching Tip #5 Chin over shoulder. It is important that you dont put your chin on your shoulder. Many pitchers have the tendency to tilt their head to the left or right when they explode to foot strike. If you lead with your front shoulder, in a closed position to foot strike, you will more likely to keep your energy going forward.
