Different Pitching Workouts

There are hundreds of pitching workouts out there. You may wonder which ones are the best for you. After all, there is only so much time in the day, which exercises are going to help you maximize your time and keep you in shape, and most importantly healthy, the rest of your career?

 

 

Understanding how your body works in the pitching motion (pitching mechanics) will help you decide which exercises are going to be a waste of your time and which ones aren’t. Let me help point you in the right direction.

 

First of all, a pitcher must understand that you don’t just rely on your arm to throw the ball. I like Tom House’s explanation best when he says throwing a baseball is a feet to fingertip exercise. There are many different phases of pitching mechanics; we don’t have time to cover all of them here, but just know that your entire body has to be prepared for the workload of throwing the ball.

While choosing your pitching workouts carefully, make sure they include the following:

 

 

Functional warm-ups with flexibility work (a pitcher should work up a sweat before picking the ball up and throwing) Choose exercises for both pre and post-game work.

 

Core-Strength Training with Torso stability work (core strength and torso work may include workouts with both medicine ball and bosu ball.) We are working on a book right now that will focus on these core exercises. It will have over 150 illustrations. Of course, you will only need to choose 10-12 of them in your routine at one time. I like choosing a variety of exercises that work the same muscle groups (with different levels of difficulty) to keep me from getting bored and plateauing.

 

Weight Resistance/Static Training/Joint Integrity work (elastic bands)

 

Don’t forget skill work, Drill work etc.
