Baseball Pitching: Throw with a purpose!
Every time you throw the baseball you should do it with a goal in mind, whether it is improving your pitching mechanics, learning different pitching grips, increasing pitching velocity, pitch location and so on. When you play catch with your teammates or friends, you get talking, and its easy to ignore how youre throwing the baseball; particularly if you are just starting to learn pitching mechanics. It becomes easy for you to go back to old throwing behaviors. Habits like opening up to soon and not exploding to foot strike will soon show up when its your turn to pitch if you dont focus on a goal.
Im sure you have heard of the following quote: You play (in a game) how you practice. Let me remind all pitchers that are working on pitching mechanics drills: Do Not Become Robotic! For example: If you are working on staying closed to foot strike, dont get to foot strike slowly. Your intent as a pitcher is to explode to foot strike creating as much momentum as possible to deliver a great fastball. If you do your drills slowly, youll perform that way when its gametime and wonder why you lost pop on the ball.
I received the following e-mail from Brian Cain today.
I hate to see guys play catch and just throw the ball back and forth. Theres no feedback, theres no goal. Every time you throw the ball in a game, your going to have some place youre trying to throw it, so you better do the same thing in practice.
