Baseball Pitchers: Beware of Core Weakness
Add core stability and strength exercises as part of your pitching workout routine.
Regardless of what sport you are involved in; it is important that you have good core strength. To keep up with the demands of throwing a baseball, it is imperative that you dont ignore your core-strength pitching workouts. Every time a pitcher throws the ball, he bends over and then he returns to a standing position. Many pitchers, throughout the course of the year tend to have lower back pains due to lack of core stability and strength. Sometimes an athlete feels they have great core strength, but they ignore an important part of the core, their back. It is natural for an athlete to want to look good, so it is easy for many to turn to exercises that strengthen the abdominals, chest and arms. It is equally important to workout your lower back and choose exercises that strengthen the back. Some of the greatest exercises that strengthen the lower back include hyperextensions and supermans. As an athlete, you are more prone to injury if you have strong stomach muscles and a weak back; the imbalance is unhealthy.
When choosing your core strength exercises to implement into your pitching workouts, consider a beginner, intermediate and advanced program. It is damaging to your core to choose exercises that you arent ready for. As you progress and you feel that your core is strengthening, make sure you move to the next level of core exercises. Just like any muscle in your body, the core needs to be challenged, so up the weight on your lifts before you begin to plateau.
